'Fans of the late Douglas Adams, or, even, Monty Python, will feel at home with Fforde' - Herald The BookWorld's leading enforcement officer Thursday Next is four months into an enforced semi-retirement following an assassination attempt. She returns home to Swindon for what you'd expect to be a time of recuperation. If only life were that simple. Thursday is faced with an array of family problems - son Friday's lack of focus since his career in the Chronoguard was relegated to a might-have-been, daughter Tuesday's difficulty perfecting the Anti-Smote shield needed to thwart an angry Deity's promise to wipe Swindon off the face of the earth, and Jenny, who doesn't exist. And that's not all. With Goliath attempting to replace Thursday at every opportunity with synthetic Thursdays, the prediction that Friday's Destiny-Aware colleagues will die in mysterious circumstances, and a looming meteorite that could destroy all human life on earth, Thursday's retirement is going to be anything but easy . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 ESSE Junior Scholar Book Award in Literatures in the English Language The Literature of Reconstruction argues for the term and concept of 'postmillennial reconstruction' to fill the gap left by the decline of postmodernism and deconstruction as useful cultural and literary categories. Wolfgang Funk shows how this notion emerges from the theoretical and philosophical development that led to the demise of postmodernism by relating it to the idea of 'authenticity': immediate experience that eludes direct representation. In addition, he provides a clear formal framework with which to identify and classify the features of 'reconstructive literature' by updating the narratological category of 'metafiction', originally established in the 1980s. Based on Werner Wolf's observation of a 'metareferential turn' in contemporary arts and media, he illustrates how the specific use of metareference results in a renegotiation of the specific patterns of literary communication and claims that this renegotiation can be profitably described with the concept of 'reconstruction'. To substantiate this claim, in the second half of the book Funk discusses narrative texts that illustrate this transition from postmodern deconstruction to postmillennial reconstruction. The analyses take in distinguished and prize-winning writers such as Dave Eggers, Julian Barnes, Jennifer Egan and Jasper Fforde. The broad scope of authors, featuring writers from the US as well as the UK, underlines the fact that the reconstructive tendencies and strategies Funk diagnoses are of universal significance for the intellectual and cultural self-image of the global North.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely edited collection asks bold and urgent questions about the complexity, culture, and character of curriculum studies in Canada. Featuring 30 original chapters and 21 short invocations, this volume includes works by both established and new scholars, illustrating the wide range of cutting-edge writing in this area. Weaving together personal essays, poetry, life writing, and other arts-based inquiry modes, Canadian Curriculum Studies highlights the creative, performative, interactive, and imaginative nature of this field. The contributors were asked to provoke conceptions and understandings of curriculum studies by examining their convictions, commitments, and challenges with/in this discipline. By bringing together diverse indigenous and non-indigenous scholarship, the editors invoke the concept of métissage, which is finding a growing resonance both in Canada and abroad. Exploring the idea of curriculum studies as an interdisciplinary field across transnational contexts, this rich text is well-suited to senior undergraduate and graduate courses in curriculum studies and qualitative educational research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th century has become especially relevant for the present—as one can see from, for example, large-scale adaptations of written works, as well as the explosion of commodities and even interactive theme parks. This book is an introduction to the novelistic refashionings that have come after the Victorian age with a special focus on revisions of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. As post–Victorian research is still in the making, the first part is devoted to clarifying terminology and interpretive contexts. Two major frameworks for reading post–Victorian fiction are developed: the literary scene (authors, readers, critics) and the national-identity, political and social aspects. Among the works examined are Caryl Phillips’s Cambridge, Matthew Kneale’s English Passengers, Peter Carey’s Oscar and Lucinda and Jack Maggs, Lloyd Jones’s Mister Pip, Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, D.M. Thomas’s Charlotte, and Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair.
