Book excerpt: If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p. 18) "Then the bowsprit got mixed with the rudder sometimes." In view of this painful possibility, I will not (as I might) appeal indignantly to my other writings as a proof that I am incapable of such a deed: I will not (as I might) point to the strong moral purpose of this poem itself, to the arithmetical principles so cautiously inculcated in it, or to its noble teachings in Natural History-I will take the more prosaic course of simply explaining how it happened. The Bellman, who was almost morbidly sensitive about appearances, used to have the bowsprit unshipped once or twice a week to be revarnished, and it more than once happened, when the time came for replacing it, that no one on board could remember which end of the ship it belonged to. They knew it was not of the slightest use to appeal to the Bellman about it-he would only refer to his Naval Code, and read out in pathetic tones Admiralty Instructions which none of them had ever xbeen able to understand-so it generally ended in its being fastened on, anyhow, across the rudder. The helmsman1 used to stand by with tears in his eyes: he knew it was all wrong, but alas! Rule 42 of the Code, "No one shall speak to the Man at the Helm," had been completed by the Bellman himself with the words "and the Man at the Helm shall speak to no one." So remonstrance was impossible, and no steering could be done till the next varnishing day. During these bewildering intervals the ship usually sailed backwards. Contents: FIT I - The Landing, FIT II - The Bellman's Speech, FIT III - The Baker's Tale, FIT IV - The Hunting, FIT V - The Beaver's Lesson, FIT VI - The Barrister's Dream, FIT VII - The Banker's Fate, FIT VIII - The Vanishing

Carroll, who completed this classic poem eleven years after the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, invites readers along on a fictitious hunt to determine who - or what - the Snark actually is." "Now, over 130 years later, Martin Gardner, the extraordinary "philosophical scrivener," returns to the Snark with a trove of new annotations and illustrations, offering readers fresh insights into Carroll's existential play of fancy and philosophy." "Henry Holiday's original drawings enhance the work, as does a new introduction by Adam Gopnik that communicates the relevance this strange and in many ways ominous poem holds for a new generation of readers."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "The last of the crew needs especial remark, Though he looked an incredible dunce: He had just one idea—but, that one being ‘Snark’, The good Bellman engaged him at once." ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876) is a nonsense poem by ‘Alice Adventures in Wonderland’ author Lewis Carroll. It describes the disastrous hunting mission by a bizarre group of characters, among these a butcher who can only kill beavers and a guy who forgot his own name. Gloriously nonsensical, this poem is bound to appeal to all fans of Alice. Lewis Caroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (1832-1898), was a British mathematician, photographer, and children’s book author. The idea for his most famous work, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', came to Carroll when he was on a boat with friends, having to entertain three young girls, one of whose name was Alice. Despite his success as a children’s book author, Carroll considered himself, first and foremost, a man of science and mathematics.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Hunting of the Snark - With the Original High Resolution Illustrations of Henry Holiday” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Hunting of the Snark is a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll. Written from 1874 to 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking Glass. The plot follows a crew of ten trying to hunt the Snark, an animal which may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum; the only one of the crew to find the Snark quickly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that it was a Boojum after all. Henry Holiday illustrated the poem, and the poem is dedicated to Gertrude Chataway, whom Carroll met as a young girl at the English seaside town Sandown in the Isle of Wight in 1875. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 – 1898), better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy.

About The Hunting Of The Snark by Lewis Carroll The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is typically categorized as a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Written from 1874 to 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking Glass (1871). Henry Holiday, the illustrator of the poem, thought of it as a "tragedy". The plot follows a crew of ten trying to hunt the Snark, an animal which may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. The only one of the crew to find the Snark quickly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that it was a Boojum after all. The poem is dedicated to young Gertrude Chataway, whom Carroll met at the English seaside town Sandown in the Isle of Wight in 1875. Included with many copies of the first edition of the poem was Carroll's religious tract, An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves "Alice". The Hunting of the Snark was published by Macmillan in the United Kingdom in late March 1876, with illustrations by Henry Holiday. It had mixed reviews from reviewers who found it strange. The first printing of The Hunting of the Snark consisted of 10,000 copies. There were two reprintings by the conclusion of the year; in total, the poem was reprinted 17 times between 1876 to 1908. Carroll often denied knowing the meaning behind the poem; however, in an 1896 reply to one letter, he agreed with one interpretation of the poem as an allegory for the search for happiness. Scholars have found various meanings in the poem, among them existential angst, an allegory for tuberculosis, and a mockery of the Tichborne case. The Hunting of the Snark has been alluded to in various works and has been adapted for musicals, opera, plays, and music.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Hunt for the Snark (The Hunting of the Snark, in the original English) is a meaningless poem written by the British Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) in 1874, at the age of 42 years. The poem describes "with infinite humor, the impossible journey of an improbable crew, to find an inconceivable creature." Occasionally, he takes elements of Alice's poem Jabberwocky through the looking glass, especially some creature names like the Jubjub or the Bandersnatch; and some portmanteaus. However, it is an independent poem. It was first published in 1876 by Macmillan Publishers, with illustrations by Henry Holiday. As with other Carroll works, The Hunt for the Snark has been the subject of careful study. One of the most comprehensive studies is Martin Gardner's The Annotated Snark.Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Daresbury, Cheshire, UK, January 27, 1832-Guildford, Surrey, UK, January 14, 1898), better known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was an Anglican deacon, logician, mathematician, photographer, and British writer. His best-known works are Alice in Wonderland and its continuation, Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there.

Book excerpt: Although Mikhail Bakhtin's study of the novel does not focus in any systematic way on the role that translation plays in the processes of novelistic creation and dissemination, when he does broach the topic he grants translation'a disproportionately significant role in the emergence and constitution of literature. The contributors to this volume, from the US, Hong Kong, Finland, Japan, Spain, Italy, Bangladesh, and Belgium, bring their own polyphonic experiences with the theory and practice of translation to the discussion of Bakhtin's ideas about this topic, in order to illuminate their relevance to translation studies today. Broadly stated, the essays examine the art of translation as an exercise in a cultural re-accentuation (a transferal of the original text and its characters to the novel soil of a different language and culture, which inevitably leads to the proliferation of multivalent meanings), and to explore the various re-accentuation devices employed over the span of the last 100 years in translating modern texts from one language to another. Through its contributors, The Art of Translation in Light of Bakhtin's Re-accentuation brings together different cultural contexts and disciplines (such as literature, literary theory, the visual arts, pedagogy, translation studies, and philosophy) to demonstrate the continued international relevance of Bakhtin's ideas to the study of creative practices, broadly understood.
