With immense labor he has gathered together all that previous commentators, ancient and modern, foreign and native, have contributed to the interpretation of these sacred 'memoirs,' and in so far as it is of value has given it a place in his work. He served as rector of Honiton, England, and wrote several other commentaries, including volumes on each of the four Gospels. SADLER, MICHAEL FERREBEE (1819-1895), theologian, eldest son of Michael Thomas Sadler [q. v.], was born at Leeds in 1819. Educated at Sherborne school, he entered St. John's College, Cambridge, after a short interval of business life. He was elected Tyrwhitt's Hebrew scholar in 1846, and graduated B.A. 1847. He was vicar of Bridgwater from 1857 to 1864 (during which time he was appointed to the prebend of Combe, 13th in Wells Cathedral), and of St. Paul's, Bedford, from 1864 to 1869; he was rector of Honiton from 1869 till his death. In 1869 he received an offer of the bishopric of Montreal, carrying with it the dignity of metropolitan of Canada, but refused it on medical advice. He was a voluminous writer on theological subjects, and a strong high churchman. His works, which had a large circulation, did much to popularise the tractarian doctrines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Background to the Gospel of St. Mark, Steiner shows the relevance of this Gospel especially to our present age, the fifth post-Atlantean epoch. He describes how each of the four Gospels was written to the time and circumstances of successive cultural periods: the Matthew Gospel is most relevant to the age when Christ incarnated and enacted the Mystery of Golgotha, the fourth post-Atlantean epoch; Mark speaks to the fifth; Luke, the sixth; and the Gospel of St John addresses the consciousness of the seventh epoch. Steiner describes how what is found in the Gospel of Mark and not in the other Gospels is especially relevant to our age, such as where it speaks of a complex distressing world events which will occur at the time when Christ will become visible to many in the spiritual atmosphere of the earth, a time of false prophets and false Christs who will "seduce" many, when nations will war against nations, and of famines and natural disasters. (Mark 13) Read Bobby Matherne's review of this book Other subjects include: Investigation and communication of spiritual truths The two main streams of post-Atlantean civilization The tasks of the present, fifth post-Atlantean epoch The laws of rhythm in the domain of soul and spirit The Son of God and the son of Man The moon religion of Yahweh From Buddhism to Rosicrucianism Kyrios, Lord of the Soul Mystery teachings in Mark's Gospel much more ... These lectures discuss essential elements in Rudolf Steiner's Christology, his views on cosmic and human evolution, and the universal importance of Christ's earthly birth and the "Mystery of Golgotha."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Mark's Gospel is among the earliest records about Jesus of Nazareth. This commentary focuses primarily on the problem of understanding what Mark himself intended to convey to his readers when he set out to write 'the good news of Jesus Christ'. There is an examination of information in the gospel about the historical Jesus, about the early Christian community and about Mark's theological concerns. There is, also, consideration of the sources for the Gospel, of the tradition behind it and of interventions by editors. Professor Hooker's new commentary takes account of the many lasted twentieth-century Markan studies and comes with her own translation of the Gospel. References to Greek sources are included but do not require a knowledge of Greek.

Book excerpt: Steiner tells us that Mark was especially able to reveal Christ as a cosmic being of his greatness and power, because, after having been a pupil of Peter, he moved to Alexandria during a time when Jewish philosophy and theology was at it's peak. There he absorbed the best aspects and views of pagan gnosis. Mark was able to learn how humankind came arose from the spiritual world and how the luciferic and ahrimanic forces are taken into the human soul. Mark was able to accept everything that was told to him by pagan gnosis concerning our human origin out of the cosmos when our planet came into being. But he could also see, especially from his perspective in Egypt, the strong contrast between our original human destiny and what humankind had become during his time. This lecture cycle, like the Gospel itself, is a work of art in its own right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 book presents the reader with a comprehensive view of the theology underlying the first narrative account of the life of Jesus. In Chapter 1 Dr Telford introduces the background of the text and its general message, attempting briefly to place the Gospel (and therefore its theology) in its historical setting. In the second chapter, he describes and analyses the Gospel's theology, again from an historical perspective and with particular regard to its original context. In the third chapter, Telford goes on to examine the Gospel in relation to other relevant writings of the New Testament. Briefly reviewing this larger corpus and highlighting parallels and contrasts, where appropriate, he seeks to locate the Gospel's theology in its wider canonical context. The fourth and final chapter ranges even further afield, commenting on the Gospel's history of interpretation and on its significance in the contemporary context.

Book excerpt: The similarities and difference of arrangement and order of episodes in the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke have always been one of the major critera for resolving the Synoptic Problem. How important, and how reliable are arguments based on such considerations, and where might they lead? Here Neville reviews these issues in detail, explaining the significance of his conclusions for understanding the literary relationships among the three Synoptics gospels, and particularly for the competing theories of Markan priority (the standard two-source hypothesis) and Markan posteriority (the Griesbach hypothesis).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that Mark's gospel was not written as late as c. 65-75 CE, but dates from sometime between the late 30s and early 40s CE. It challenges the use of the external evidence (such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria) often used for dating Mark, relying instead on internal evidence from the gospel itself. James Crossley also questions the view that Mark 13 reflects the Jewish war, arguing that there are other plausible historical settings. Crossley argues that Mark's gospel takes for granted that Jesus fully observed biblical law and that Mark could only make such an assumption at a time when Christianity was largely law observant: and this could not have been later than the mid-40s, from which point on certain Jewish and gentile Christians were no longer observing some biblical laws (e.g. food, Sabbath).
