Book excerpt: This is a true account of the skinhead cult, told by a man who was really there and still is. It is NOT about Nazism, or Neo-Nazism, and definitely not about politics; it is the story of how the ebullience of youth can be corrupted and misinterpreted by propaganda and the media. Warning This story contains a lot of strong language, British slang and outspoken opinions that may be offensive to some; it is nevertheless the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retaliator, ' a skinhead band, was formed in the mid 1990's in the run down increasingly dilapidated and violent Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth on England's east coast and set out to tear away the shackles of so-called political correctness that bound the scene so tightly, systematically suffocating it to death, choking off patriotism and passion, slowly killing the fire that had once burned so brightly and fiercely within the hearts of the fans; the very lifeblood of the scene. This book is a first-hand account of the band's long embattled bitter struggle and will take you on a chaotic and often quite ridiculous roller-coaster ride as they diligently fight their way out of the wilderness, or Norfolk as it's often known, into the harsh unforgiving limelight of the murky world of Oi! music.

After giving a lecture, Max Knight, a Nobel Prize candidate and professor of genetic research, is kidnapped. His captors show him part of a corpse, a left hand, discovered when a bomb exploded at a neo-Nazi rally. To solve the mystery, Max and his assistant Katya head for Domba, deep in the Amazon rainforest, where they meet the enigmatic village-leader's daughter, Tania, and soon find themselves involved in a far-reaching Nazi plot. As they race against time from Berlin to the Amazon, California and the Vatican, will their romance grow? Even if Max has a fatal secret? Is the search for immortality immoral or the only answer to mankind's salvation? This scientific thriller was published in Japan (2002) and China (2013) and became an international bestseller. The fast-paced, action-packed story includes history, romance and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radicalism and Music offers a convincing argument for music's transformational impact on the radicalization, reinforcement, and motivational techniques of violent political activists. It makes a case for the careful examination of music's roles in radical cultures, roles that have serious impacts, as evidenced by the actions of the Frankfurt Airport shooter Arid Uka, Sikh Temple murderer Wade Page, white supremacist Matthew Hale, and animal-rights activist Walter Bond, among others. Such cases bring up difficult questions about how those involved in radical groups can be stirred to feel or act under the influence of music. Radicalism and Music is based on interviews, email correspondence, concerts, and videos. As a "sound strategy," music is exploited to its fullest potential as a tool for recruiting and retaining members by members of al-Qa'ida, the Hammerskin Nation, Christian Identity, Kids in Ministry International, Earth First!, and Vegan Straight Edge. But, as the book points out, the coercive use of music is not isolated to radical cultures, but in political propaganda, sporting events, and popular music as well. Ultimately, Radicalism and Music shows how music affects us through our emotions, and how it triggers violence and enables hateful ideology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York's urban neighborhoods are full of young would-be emcees who aspire to "keep it real" and restaurants like Sylvia's famous soul food eatery that offer a taste of "authentic" black culture. In these and other venues, authenticity is considered the best way to distinguish the real from the phony, the genuine from the fake. But in Real Black, John L. Jackson Jr. proposes a new model for thinking about these issues--racial sincerity. Jackson argues that authenticity caricatures identity as something imposed on people, imprisoning them within stereotypes--turning them into racial objects and inanimate things, instead of living, breathing human beings. Contending that such assumptions deny people agency--not to mention humanity--in their search for identity, Jackson counterposes sincerity, an internal and more productive analytical model for thinking about race. Moving in and around Harlem and Brooklyn, Jackson offers a kaleidoscope of subjects and stories that directly and indirectly address how race is negotiated in today's world--including tales of name-changing hip-hop emcees, book-vending numerologists, urban conspiracy theorists, corrupt police officers, mixed-race neo-Nazis, and high-school gospel choirs forbidden to catch the Holy Ghost. Enlisting "Anthroman," his cape-crusading critical alter ego, Jackson records and retells these interconnected sagas in virtuosic detail and, in the process, shows us how race is defined and debated, imposed and confounded every single day.

Book excerpt: Life and Work in Post-Soviet Russia revolves around the professional and personal experience of living and working in Moscow of a Singapore diplomat, beginning in the aftermath of the USSR's collapse and ending in the first decade-and-a-half of this century. The book seeks to provide readers with glimpses of life in Moscow and Russia in the mid-1990s, as well as in the early years of this century. It deals with not only the sociopolitical and economic challenges of Russia's post-Soviet leaders, but also those facing the man-in-the-street. That the man-in-the-street had to personally bear the brunt of the momentous changes in post-Soviet Russia's rush to reforms is made plain in the book, and not so much the trials and tribulations of his leaders.Life and Work in Post-Soviet Russia also looks to broaden the outlook of Singaporeans, in the first instance, and non-Russians, in general, about Russia, a country which has been portrayed in a negative light by most of the Anglo-Saxon and Western media. This book also gives readers some insight into Singapore's relations with Russia, deals with issues from a personal standpoint without any attempt to inject political science theories into its analyses, and concludes with some thoughts on its future role in the world.

Book excerpt: On March 11, 1994, nineteen-year-old Matt Wright was sentenced to serve forty-one years in the Washington State Department of Corrections for first-degree murder. Wright shares his honest perspectives and sometimes shocking personal experiences as he takes a fascinating look into the real world of prison life. Wright pulls no punches as he tells about an institution manipulated by drugs, politics, violence, gangs, and fear, where every action is scrutinized. He doesn't sugarcoat his vivid descriptions about long nights, hollow cells, strip searches, and predators, yet he also manages to show the good side of prison by sharing lessons learned, betterment programs offered, and heartfelt actions by generous staff. By including the stories of five prisoners with different backgrounds, Wright proves that each inmate experiences prison life very differently. Finally, he shares the touching words of his now-deceased sister, Katie, who provides a firsthand account of the trauma she suffered after his arrest and the strength she subsequently gained as a result. One day Matt Wright will go home, and this will not be his life. For those about to enter prison and for their families they left behind, Wright has provided the information needed to help ease into a new life behind walls.

Download Thought Suppression PDF Format Full Free by Eric Rassin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to ban unwanted thoughts from consciousness? According to the literature on thought suppression, the answer is no. In the 1980s, Wegner and colleges demonstrated that the average person cannot prevent a trivial thought like that of a polar bear from entering consciousness approximately seven times in a five minute period. This experimental finding was followed by a substantial number of replications. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the thought suppression literature. First, similarities and differences between suppression, repression, and dissociation are discussed. Methodological issues are then considered. Finally, the clinical applications of the thought suppression literature are discussed. Although there are numerous conditions to which the phenomenon of suppression can be applied, obsession and traumatic recollection are the main applications. In addition to offering an overview of the literature, this book links the thought suppression paradigm to other research fields, such as directed forgetting and repressive coping. Furthermore, it discusses the phenomenon of thought suppression in the light of broader theories such as the cognitive theory of obsession, and the ego depletion hypothesis. Clinical implications and directions for future research are offered.
