Book excerpt: Escape from Hat tells the epic story of Leek, a particularly lucky rabbit in a particularly unlucky situation. After a fateful magic trick sends Leek tumbling into the land of Hat, the rabbit must find his way through deadly peril back to the boy he is sworn to protect. But the land of Hat belongs to the black cats, whose job it is to spread ill luck to their hapless humans. When Millikin discovers his nemesis, Leek, is wandering through his own backyard, he makes it the top priority of all the cats of Hat to rout out Leek and his companions with the help of their unlucky wits and the terrible destruction of the Dimmer-Dammers. Meanwhile, in the land where there is a sun, the boy Cecil is left without the luck - good or ill - of his unseen companions, Leek and Millikin. On his own journey to retrieve both his rabbit and his luck, Cecil must discover the truth behind the unfortunate magic trick, or face a future without any luck at all. From rickety caravans to sea monsters, the parallel journeys of rabbit and boy are a reminder that love and friendship are the greatest magics of all. From master storyteller and critically acclaimed screenwriter Adam Kline comes a classic story brought brilliantly to life with illustrations from Brian Taylor (creator of Rustboy) that manage to evoke both traditional fantasy and pop art fandom. This is a book to keep and give away, to read curled up in a corner and aloud at bedtime, for children and for the child at heart.

Book excerpt: Civil Rights of US is a novel story of Bright Quang. He's creative; this story let him struggle with injustice because he said, "Wisdom must be won the injustice power." The citizen has made general elections, paid full taxes, and not violating any crimes. Thus, the good citizen should be equal before the court systems without discriminate races. Obviously, the rightness or the wrongness of a good citizen, his or her case, belongs to the courts that decided but not to the clerk of the United States Justice Department. He says, "Perform justice, which is peaceful, but anti-justice, as demagogy." Moreover, we live in modern society. When we are struggling to seek the justice within our sharp pen, we are glorious more than everything in our lives. Finally, the best citizen is expressed by the voice of wisdom without violations if the good citizen should be loyal to its national American and American people.

Written with the needs of the learner very much in mind, it sets out the grammar of the language in a clear and jargon-free way. Each chapter starts with an overview of the main grammatical terminology and concepts; these terms are also cross-referenced in the glossary at the end of the book. To provide a visual guide through each chapter, the main points in each section are highlighted, and tables summarise important patterns. 'Tip' boxes, which help the student to master particular points, are scattered through the text. Every point has numerous illustrative examples, each with its translation, carefully chosen from a wide range of printed and electronic media - books, newspapers, magazines, film and chat-rooms - to reflect contemporary usage across a range of registers.

Book excerpt: Good and bad luck battle to control the world in this hilarious and enchanting middle grade novel about a lucky rabbit, an evil black cat, and one hapless boy caught between them, from award-wining screenwriter and debut author Adam Kline. We all have good luck and bad, courtesy of our very own lucky rabbits and bad-luck black cats. Most people never notice them. Cecil Bean certainly never noticed the villainous cat, Millikin, that lurked around every corner or his devoted rabbit, Leek, who was never far from his side. At least not until Millikin hatches a deliciously evil plan to vanish Leek into a magician's hat, leaving Cecil with no good luck at all and stranding poor Leek in a world that no rabbit has ever escaped from. Leek and Cecil will do anything to find their way back to each other--even if it means facing enormous odds and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. To escape from Hat, Leek must sail across the Great Ink, travel beyond the Jungle Prime Evil, trek through the Grottos of Ill Repute, and enter the heart of all bad luck: the fortress of the black cats itself. All while Cecil heads out on an adventure of his own to find the hard-heartened magician, whose tricks seem to have turned Cecil's life upside down. Gear up for adventure in this boisterously entertaining debut novel by award-winning screenwriter Adam Kline! Soon to be a major animated motion picture from Academy Award-nominated director (Kung Fu Panda, Little Prince) Mark Osborne.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the subject of choice of law as a whole and provides an analysis of its various rules, principles, doctrines and concepts. It offers a conceptual account of choice of law, called "choice equality foundation" (CEF), which aims to flesh out the normative basis of the subject. The author reveals that, despite the multiplicity of titles and labels within the myriad choice of law rules and practices of the U.S., Canadian, European, Australian, and other systems, many of them effectively confirm and crystallize CEF's vision of the subject. This alignment signifies the necessarily intimate relationship between theory and practice by which the normative underpinnings of CEF are deeply embedded and reflected in actual practical reality. Among other things, this book provides a justification of the nature and limits of such popular principles as party autonomy, most significant relationship, and closest connection. It also discusses such topics as the actual operation of public policy doctrine in domestic courts, and the relation between the notion of international human rights and international commercial dealings, and makes some suggestions about the ability of traditional rules to cope with the advancing challenges of the digital age and the Internet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, psychotherapists have known that Laura Perls was actively involved in the development of what today is known as Gestalt therapy, although her husband, Frederick Perls, officially authored the foundational texts. Laura Perls’s own professional publications are succinct and appreciated, but they are not numerous. The present volume, comprising Laura Perls’s heretofore unpublished writing, including journal entries, letters, poems, translations, short stories, and drafts for lectures and publications, offers a very personal perspective on one of the founders of Gestalt therapy. The extensive interview that Daniel Rosenblatt conducted with Laura Perls in 1972, published here for the first time in English, complements her literary texts, and provides valuable background information. Laura Perls’s history spans two world wars, flight from Nazi persecution, life on three continents, and many new beginnings. Together with her known works, these literary texts reflect the emergence of women into professional and public life during the 20th century by giving the reader insight into this time period and the influence of a woman on the development of a major school of Humanistic Psychology. The rich cultural background from which Laura Perls benefited and the authors whose works inspired her resonate in her literary texts, a treasure chest of personal reflections during the decades of her life from 1946 to 1985. In addition, a general overview of her life is provided, her theoretical and practical contributions to the origins and development of Gestalt therapy are described, and her legacy to the field of Gestalt therapy is elucidated. Laura Perls was known for making the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy a viable and important teaching community. For decades, she was the keeper of the flame of this foundational Gestalt institute. Best known for her concepts of contact and support, the creative use of experiments, and productive use of embarrassment, Laura Perls’s literary texts are finally made available here.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that "...few military technologies have evolved as little as chemical weapons over the past half century," they have become nearly as dreaded as nuclear weapons. A forensic chemist who served as a US Army scientist traces the use of such agents from Germany's use of poison gases in World War I to chemical warfare research/use by the Soviet Union, US, Iraq, and other countries from 1970-2000. He discusses seven classes of agents (sarin and VX are described, but not ricin); their effects; delivery systems; locations of US chemical stockpiles; limitations; protection; detection/decontamination/protection equipment; and potential targets. Appends abbreviations and acronyms. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
