Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By arguing that Matthew's Gospel can be read as a "homecoming story" according to the ancient formula of the "Banished and Returning Prince," Robert Beck offers a fresh and provocative reinterpretation of the Gospel. He exploits this understanding of the narrative to disclose new elements within the plot, to identify a fresh resolution to conflict development within the tale, and to arrive at an unprecedented explanation of the place of violence and nonviolence within Matthew's text. The traditional roles of Usurper, Impostor, and Mentor are examined for insight into what Matthew's narrative achieves as well as, perhaps more importantly, what it excludes in the way of cultural expectations of violent reprisal.

It's a place free of death and disease due to a mysterious ceremony called the Banishment. It's a secret system that has worked well for decades. But, secrets rarely stay secret forever. When Hedwin's grandmother is about to undertake her own Banishment, he and his best friend Laura Beth decide to find out what their beloved Anastasia is about to experience. Just like disease, murder has no place in Elkbury, but it has wormed its way in. Wren Goodwort takes it upon herself to find the mysterious killer and clear her name in the process. Soon Wren, Hedwin, Laura Beth, and the rest of the villagers are thrown together to fight for their lives as deadly, monstrous, and hungry secrets are uncovered and Elkbury's delicate balance is destroyed. "Banished" will introduce you to your new favourite monsters; some human, some not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A community is defined not only by inclusion but also by exclusion. Seventeenth-century New England Puritans, themselves exiled from one society, ruthlessly invoked the law of banishment from another: over time, hundreds of people were forcibly excluded from this developing but sparsely settled colony. Nan Goodman suggests that the methods of banishment rivaled—even overpowered—contractual and constitutional methods of inclusion as the means of defining people and place. The law and rhetoric that enacted the exclusion of certain parties, she contends, had the inverse effect of strengthening the connections and collective identity of those that remained. Banished investigates the practices of social exclusion and its implications through the lens of the period's common law. For Goodman, common law is a site of negotiation where the concepts of community and territory are more fluid and elastic than has previously been assumed for Puritan society. Her legal history brings fresh insight to well-known as well as more obscure banishment cases, including those of Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, Thomas Morton, the Quakers, and the Indians banished to Deer Island during King Philip's War. Many of these cases were driven less by the religious violations that may have triggered them than by the establishment of rules for membership in a civil society. Law provided a language for the Puritans to know and say who they were—and who they were not. Banished reveals the Puritans' previously neglected investment in the legal rhetoric that continues to shape our understanding of borders, boundaries, and social exclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Mao Zedong’s Anti-Rightist Campaign of 1957–58, Chinese intellectuals were subjected to “re-education” by the state. In Banished to the Great Northern Wilderness, Ning Wang draws on labour farm archives and other newly uncovered Chinese-language sources, including an interview with a camp guard, to provide a remarkable look at the suffering and complex psychological world of intellectuals banished to China’s remote north. Wang’s use of grassroots sources challenges our perception of the intellectual as a renegade martyr – revealing how exiles often denounced one another and, for self-preservation, declared allegiance to the state.

Book excerpt: After a few close brushes with death, young Ivan was turned—into a vampire. Caught up in the eternal battle between vampires and werewolves, the young vampire must find his way in an inexplicable new world. Older, wiser, and a veteran of the war, Ivan has gained a more worldly and mature view of the realities of life—and the afterlife. Everything has a cause and an effect, he’s learned. Sometimes, as in Ivan’s case, circumstance itself defines a person’s future. Other times, those circumstances force the unprepared into situations outside of their control. You can crumble, or you can change. Ivan changed. He always thought he would have more time with his family and friends, more time to keep the many promises he made when he was mortal. But war is coming, the pieces are in motion, and somewhere on the battlefield is a promise he can’t escape. Ivan has vowed to kill the man who tried to kill him. He’ll do whatever it takes to reunite a mother and daughter. Nothing and no one—mortal or otherwise—can stop him. No sacrifice is too great for his cause. It’s time for Ivan to keep his promises and break his enemies.

Book excerpt: A fast paced YA Fantasy set in a post-apocalyptic world: In a world reduced to walled cities of survivors, only the pure are allowed into mainstream society. Anyone displaying signs of genetic mutation is immediately ripped from their homes and cast into a Compound. Here they are tattooed, forever marking them as an outcast. On the day of their sixteenth birthday, they are forced into the Trials and tested for the extent of their mutation. If they Fail they will be Banished into the wilderness of a world three hundred years after the DNA Wars Genetic mutations have led to strange powers of magic: a group of misfits escape certain death and embark on a quest for the City of Lights, where they hope to be free from persecution. These six young mutants will have to cope not only with survival in the horror of a genetically altered wilderness, but also with mutations that continue to evolve. ‘I stare at my reflection, noting how the anger simmers just below the mask of my indifference. I grimace and try to dampen down. I will need to add extra whorls today, a distraction I hope. When the minders get a look at my face this morning I want them to see arrogance and disdain in my embellished tattoo… not the expression of someone fighting for control. My sixteenth birthday isn’t here yet, I reminded myself. Today is not my day to die.’

Book excerpt: Banished is an eye-opening, deeply personal account of life inside the cult known as the Westboro Baptist Church, as well as a fascinating story of adaptation and perseverance. You've likely heard of the Westboro Baptist Church. Perhaps you've seen their pickets on the news, the members holding signs with messages that are too offensive to copy here, protesting at events such as the funerals of soldiers, the 9-year old victim of the recent Tucson shooting, and Elizabeth Edwards, all in front of their grieving families. The WBC is fervently anti-gay, anti-Semitic, and anti- practically everything and everyone. And they aren't going anywhere: in March, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the WBC's right to picket funerals. Since no organized religion will claim affiliation with the WBC, it's perhaps more accurate to think of them as a cult. Lauren Drain was thrust into that cult at the age of 15, and then spat back out again seven years later. Lauren spent her early years enjoying a normal life with her family in Florida. But when her formerly liberal and secular father set out to produce a documentary about the WBC, his detached interest gradually evolved into fascination, and he moved the entire family to Kansas to join the church and live on their compound. Over the next seven years, Lauren fully assimilated their extreme beliefs, and became a member of the church and an active and vocal picketer. But as she matured and began to challenge some of the church's tenets, she was unceremoniously cast out from the church and permanently cut off from her family and from everyone else she knew and loved. Banished is the story of Lauren's fight to find herself amidst dramatic changes in a world of extremists and a life in exile.
